Property tax to go up by Rs 365, thanks to sanitation: AMC

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to introduce user charges for garbage collection, an additional tax for sanitation. The civic body will charge Rs 1/day for residential units and Rs 2/day for commercial units starting October 1, 2018. The AMC is expected to earn Rs 116 crore through user charges from more than 16 lakh residential units and around 8 lakh commercial units.

A detailed proposal will be submitted by the executive wing before the Standing Committee on Friday. The Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2016, which states that the civic body is responsible for door-to-door collection, transportation and disposal of waste, allows the AMC to levy user charges for sanitation service.

This will also add points for the civic body in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2019 competition for clean city ranking. For the next edition, 15 points have been allocated for user.

For the evaluation, copy of challan/receipt issued to waste generators for collection of user charges and copy of the notification of user charges will be reviewed. Any city which successfully notifies and enforces user charges will get 15 points. If a city has notified user charges but not enforced them, it will get 10 points instead.

The agenda proposed by the administrative wing mentions that the tax department will levy the charges from October 1, 2018. This means that the city has already secured 10 points. The review will take place on January 2019.
